SIRACUSA

SIRACUSA BY MARIJANA BZOVSKI
SIRACUSA - RAGUSA TOURIST GUIDE

The city of Syracuse is located on the southeast coast of Sicily it was one of the largest cities of the ancient world and among the largest of the greek polis world, Roman and Byzantine.

Syracuse since 2005, along with the necropolis of Pantalica, became part of the World Heritage list, or sites that UNESCO declared World Heritage. Siracusa and the necropolis of Pantalica form a "Together", which is a unique collection, in the same space, the extraordinary testimony of the Mediterranean cultures through the ages.Their extraordinary cultural diversity, offer an exceptional testimony to the development of civilization over three millennia. In addition, the group of monuments and archeological sites situated in Syracuse, between the center of Ortigia and the whole urban area, are the greatest example of the exceptional architectural creation Greek, Roman and Baroque. The ancient Syracuse was directly linked to events, ideas and literary works of universal importance. In Syracuse history are many churches demolished, disappearances and desecrated, not to be missed is a visit to the Cathedral of Syracuse, where they are incorporated into the columns of the Temple of Athena, and the Church of Saint Lucia to the Abbey (Chiesa di Santa Lucia alla Badia) which contains within it inside the "Burial of Saint Lucia", a precious painting by Caravaggio painting in 1608. Other churches to visit are the Church of St. John the Catacombs (Chiesa di San Giovanni alle Catacombe) and the Church of Saint Lucia to the Sepulchre (Chiesa di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro). Of recent times but of great cultural and architectural significance is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears (Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime), it is a great Christian heritage of the city. Then we expect the archaeological area of Syracuse, "Neapolis Park" (Parco della Necropoli), where inside we find the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, which is the most famous monument of Syracuse, it is for the largest size of Magna Greece, and of Greece itself . Inside we are also the Syracuse Roman Amphitheatre, ancient Roman theater among the largest in Italy. Besides the two historic theaters can be visited, the Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio), famous latomia tied to the legend on the tyrant Dionysius; Latomia of Paradise (Latomia del Paradiso); The Roman Pool (La Piscina Romana); the Cave of the Nymph (la Grotta del Ninfeo); the Rope Makers Cave (la Grotta dei Cordari) and several other sites. Syracuse is famous in the island of Ortigia, which is the oldest part of the city, where in addition to the cathedral and important religious buildings are concentrated all the buildings, in baroque, liberty style, rococò and classical. Also from the Porta Marina to the Castello Maniace there is a succession of natural springs and sources, among the most important are the "Fonte of Diana" and the very popular "Fonte Aretusa".

And as I always say to all: "If you turn the Sicily have seen half of Europe if not half a world!"
